Ask a dbt Labs team member what makes the company’s culture special and they will tell you: a sense of belonging. “The people at dbt Labs make sure that everybody has a seat at the table from day one,” Web Strategy Lead Emily Mermell said. That same sense of belonging, as well as of “psychological safety,” was how Head of Data Erica Louie knew that dbt Labs was the place she wanted to grow her career. “I’ve always felt comfortable saying what I’m anxious about and identifying my areas of weakness,” she said. Senior Solutions Architect Randy Pitcher agrees. “I've found it easier to build strong working relationships — and a few deep friendships — here than anywhere else,” he said.

Build belonging in the workplace

As chair of dbt Labs’ Team Diversity Committee, Mermell works to shape policies and offer resources that address the question, “How do we build and support dbt Labs team members?” To this end, Mermell and her colleagues organize events and groups that celebrate diversity and encourage belonging. Dbt Labs' proudest accomplishment with regards to DEI to date? Creating an ERG framework to foster strong communities and safe spaces at the organization. Mermell is looking forward to publishing dbt Lab’s first annual team diversity report, highlighting the workforce's diversity.

Erica Louie

Head of Data

Louie first joined dbt Labs as a data analyst in 2017. She was the company’s second employee, its first entry-level hire. Leadership quickly identified her potential, in both skill set and values alignment, and set her on a growth path that would eventually lead her to head of data. “My managers cultivated my path forward,” Louie said. “They saw that in me before I saw it in myself.” Now, Louie works to foster the type of environment she enjoyed as an individual contributor, quickly turning around constructive, positive feedback, celebrating successes and identifying areas for improvement.

I try to be very transparent about what’s on my mind, where I see us growing and identifying any concerns along the way. This way, we grow not just as individuals, but also as a team.
