The Role

The Portfolio Management team is responsible for the software system that manages each participant's current investment (retirement fund). Our team regularly undertakes projects that are critical to the company's success, often ranking as the top priority. In 2024, our team will expand by approximately 60% to seize new and exciting business opportunities. We will develop new products, features, and services from scratch to cater to a brand new set of customer base, creating a significant new revenue source for the company.

As a senior backend engineer, you will lead challenging technical projects within an agile team framework. You excel in backend software development, cloud infrastructure, performance analysis, and scalable database technologies. You will help build our next-generation horizontally scalable financial engine, collaborating with domain experts to design, build, test, and own systems for servicing 401(k) plans. Reliability and performance are crucial, and you will build robust, observable, maintainable, and scalable systems. You are a collaborative team player who is eager to learn and coach teammates, committed to continuous improvement.

  • Build and maintain software to process and record customers' retirement savings.
  • Improve processes and systems for robustness, performance, and reduced human intervention.
  • Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to share knowledge and build expertise.
  • Write clean, high-quality code and automated tests.
  • Develop and analyze monitors and tests to assess performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Develop ownership over critical retirement workflows and domains.
  • Make informed engineering tradeoff decisions.
  • Delight internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in development lifecycle activities, including analysis, design, coding, testing, and production release.

  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience building and maintaining backend software
  • Experience building scalable backend services.
  • You enjoy mentoring other engineers and helping them grow technically. 
  • You often have become a key go-to person in your company, even on projects outside your project area.
  • Experience scaling database platforms (NoSQL, SQL)
  • Strong desire to learn, share knowledge with others, exchange feedback, and grow.
  • Ability to write clean, performant, maintainable, testable code.
  • Proactive and empathetic mindset, eager to fix problems for our customers.
  • Formal training in computer science or a related discipline (Bachelors or Masters preferred).

- At Human Interest, there are a number of factors that are used to determine the appropriate pay range for each position. We take into account the cost of labor for each position in various markets across the US. The base salary for this position spans $190,000 - $210,000and represents the minimum in our lowest geographic region to a maximumin our highest geographic region. The salary that we offer to a new employee within this range is based on their location within the US, their relevant job-related skills, and experience. At Human Interest, base salary is one component of the overall Total Rewards package. Depending on the position, additional compensation components such as bonus, commission, and equity may be offered.
