The Fraud and Merchant Risk Team is responsible for identifying and mitigating risks both within Toast’s Fintech lines of business and within the larger organization. The team designs controls and monitoring programs to prevent and identify fraudulent activity, responds to fraud events, designates risk tolerance for onboarding across Toast’s suite of products, and assists in designing customer experiences around fraud and prevention.


The Director of Fraud and Merchant Risk Strategy will lead a newly developing strategy function within the team. Playing a counterpart to the Operations function, this team will be responsible for assessing risks across different products, working closely with Product teams to identify controls and mitigants, and working with the Fraud and Merchant Risk operational teams to develop appropriate procedures and policies. The Director role will serve as the leader of this function, be responsible for developing a standardized risk approach to product development and lifecycle, and driving excellence across the team.


What you will do:

  • Build and iterate on a strategy and vision for the Fraud and Merchant Risk organization to address risk concerns across all Toast products
  • Communicate strategy and goals to broader organization, including FinTech leadership team
  • Develop and document a standardized framework and approach to assessing risk across emerging and existing products
  • Develop relationships with Product teams and show up as a consistent voice of risk mitigation while keeping customer experience at the forefront of solutioning
  • Report out to management and leadership on progress across developing areas
  • Identify, monitor, and report on key performance indicators
  • Highlight key risks to leadership and develop processes for gaining alignment or obtaining sign off on risk acceptance


Do you have the right ingredients?

  • 7-10 years of experience in risk- or fraud-focused roles, FinTech experience required
  • Comfortable with collaborating cross-functionally and reporting out to senior leadership audiences
  • Ability to identify and quantify risks, and balance the approach with customer experience
  • Previous experience managing teams and/or people and proven ability to build and manage an effective team
  • Excellent and creative problem solving skills and the ability to drive outcomes

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.

$148,000$237,000 USD
