Things to Consider Before Hiring a General Contractor. If you're considering replacing your old windows, here are a few things you should consider. First, you'll need to measure the size of your openings. Make sure they are square, with dimensions the same from corner to corner. If your frames aren't square, shim them to match, or purchase full replacement windows. If you're not sure what size window you need, use an angle-measuring tool to measure the width and depth of the sill. Second, consider the style and material of your existing windows. For example, if your windows are made of wood, you'll want to make sure they're structurally sound before you spend money on new windows. Full-frame windows are more expensive than insert windows, but they are also better suited for the climate of your home. Insert windows are also an option, though they have less glass surface. You'll also need to consider how much sunlight your home gets. Third, remember that replacing windows in an older home may double the cost of the project. Other challenges include repairing rotted trim, matching historical architecture, and fitting custom pieces. Additionally, you'll need to add insulation to the area where the windows will go.
