Reddit is looking for an experienced Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the Notifications Relevance team. The team is in the mission to send the right content to the right user at the right time using the right channel (push notification, email digest and in-app). Leveraging machine learning and large-scale system development, we process hundreds of millions of posts and user activities to provide personalized recommendations for tens of millions of users. The team plays a critical role in driving daily active users (DAU) and enhancing user retention on Reddit.

Responsibilities:

  • Tackle various challenging problems, including budgeting optimization, candidate retrieval, and ranking. This involves researching, implementing, improving, testing, and launching new model enhancements to boost user engagement.
  • Design and implement content discovery algorithms to connect users with the most relevant content.
  • Develop scalable systems that handle the complexity and volume of Reddit’s vast user base and content, including large-scale data, models, pipelines, and product integration.
  • Own and drive technical roadmaps, lead day-to-day project execution, and contribute significantly to the team's vision and strategy.
  • Serve as the primary ML domain expert, influencing technology choices.
  • Drive architectural decisions and implementation across the engineering organization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including product managers, engineers, and data scientists, to identify opportunities for business impact, understand and prioritize requirements for machine learning systems and data pipelines, and drive engineering decisions while quantifying impact.
  • Foster a culture that values diverse viewpoints while navigating complex decisions.
  • Make significant contributions to both immediate wins and long-term objectives through rapid experimentation and iterative processes.
  • Lead by example to build a culture of craftsmanship and innovation.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications and Requirements: 

  • 8+ years of post-internship, full-time industry experience
  • 6+ years of hands-on professional experience in building and productionizing end-to-end state of the art candidate retrieval and ranking machine learning models at scale.
  • Deep systems level understanding of industry scale recommendation systems.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python, Golang.
  • Proficient in working and building machine learning models using PyTorch or Tensorflow.
  • Big Plus:
    • Experience with large scale data processing & pipeline orchestration tools like Dataflow, Kubeflow, Airflow, BigQuery and Ray.
    • Experience in large-scale deep learning recommendation model training using parallel computing, distributed training frameworks (e.g., Ray Training, PyTorch Distributed), and efficient utilization of hardware resources is a big plus.
  • MS or PhD degree in Computer Science or related field

In addition to base salary, this job is eligible to receive equity in the form of restricted stock units, and depending on the position offered, it may also be eligible to receive a commission. The base pay range for this position is:

$230,000$322,000 USD
