The Role
The Square Quality Automation team ensures the quality, reliability, and efficiency of our mobile, web, and hardware platforms. We empower developers and test engineers by streamlining development and testing across platforms.
We're looking for a Software Engineer to build scalable test automation frameworks for mobile and web. Your work will directly accelerate product delivery by integrating with our CI/CD pipelines, helping teams ship high-quality software faster.
You'll lead the testing and quality tech stack-build systems, tools, dashboards, and frameworks-while addressing performance bottlenecks and improving. Your contributions will support a more inclusive, accessible, and reliable Square experience for our global customer base and empower engineers across the company.
You Will

  • Build and maintain automated testing infrastructure across iOS, Android, web, and hardware, reducing friction and improving developer experience.
  • Enhance developer efficiency by optimizing test tools, build systems, and CI pipelines for mobile and web platforms.
  • Solve performance pain points across development and testing workflows-like slow build times, testing frameworks, and IDE integrations.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver automated tests that reflect real-world use, ensuring high-quality, inclusive product experiences.
  • Simplify and accelerate the build, test, and release cycle so engineers can ship features quickly.
  • Expand our automation capabilities across all Square platforms, including Point of Sale and other key products, with scalable, reliable solutions.


You Have

  • 6+ years of experience in test engineering or software engineering, focused on mobile and web products
  • Strong background in building test automation frameworks for iOS, Android, and/or web platforms
  • Proficient in Java, Kotlin, Python, or similar programming languages
  • Hands-on experience with build systems (e.g., Gradle, Buck, Pants) and CI tools (e.g., Jenkins, CircleCI, Travis)
  • Experience managing scalable build or CI infrastructure in a production environment
  • Solid software engineering skills with experience mentoring and supporting others technically


Nice to have:

  • Hands-on experience with tools like XCUITest, Swift, Kotlin, Trade Federation, UI Automator, Xcode, and Playwright
  • Experience with developing and running tests using mobile emulators and simulators
  • Experience designing and optimizing large-scale performance tests for Android and iOS applications
  • Comfortable navigating and contributing within large-scale engineering orgs (100+ engineers), with a focus on collaboration and impact
