Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
Our Square Quality Automation team plays a critical role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and efficiency of Square's mobile, web, and hardware platforms. We focus on empowering developers and test engineers by streamlining the test and development process across multiple platforms.
We are looking for a Software Engineer who can design and develop large-scale test automation frameworks for mobile and web platforms. In this role, you will help accelerate the shipment of software by seamlessly integrating these frameworks into our CI/CD processes. Your work will enable Square engineers to deliver high-quality software faster and with greater confidence.
In this role, you will take ownership of the entire development stack as it relates to testing and quality, including build systems, tools, dashboarding, testing frameworks. You will focus on identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks within both the product and development processes, while building highly scalable solutions to enhance system reliability and ensure smooth CI integrations. By doing so, you will help deliver more reliable products to our customers and significantly boost the engineering team's productivity across the company.
You will:

  • Develop and optimize automated testing infrastructure that spans mobile (iOS and Android), web, and real hardware environments, improving the development process and reducing friction for developers.
  • Innovate to amplify the efficiency of our mobile and web developers by optimizing testing tools, build systems, and CI pipelines.
  • Identify and address critical performance bottlenecks in both the product and the development and testing workflows, including build times, testing frameworks, and IDE integrations.
  • Collaborate with Product Delivery, Quality Systems, and Developer Experience teams to deliver efficient automated tests that mirror real-world scenarios, ensuring that our products meet the highest quality standards.
  • Prioritize and streamline development and testing processes to allow engineers to build, test, and release features quickly and effortlessly.
  • Contribute to the overall quality automation footprint by developing solutions that scale across all Square platforms, including Point of Sale applications and other Square products.

You have:

  • 6+ years of test engineering and/or software engineering experience, preferably on mobile and web products.
  • Ability to design and develop tools and test automation frameworks for Mobile (iOS or Android) & Web platform automation frameworks
  • Proficient in Java, Kotlin, Python or any programming language.
  • Familiarity with build systems (e.g. Ant, Maven, Buck, Gradle, Pants) and CI tools (e.g. Circle, Travis, Jenkins)
  • Experience with supporting build or CI systems infrastructure (ideally at scale)
  • Excellent software engineering aptitude and the ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance

Nice to have:

  • Tools skill XCUI test, swift, Kotlin, Trade Federation, UI Automator, Xcode, Playwright

  • Experience optimizing and designing large scale performance tests for Android and iOS applications
  • Experience working in a large engineering organization (hundreds of engineers)
