Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
Our Square Devices Automation team plays a critical role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and efficiency of Square's hardware platforms. We focus on empowering developers and test engineers by streamlining the test and development process across multiple platforms.
We are looking for a Software Engineer who can design large-scale automation frameworks for embedded devices platforms. You will help accelerate the shipment of software by integrating these frameworks into our CI/CD processes. Your work will help Square engineers to deliver high-quality software faster and with greater confidence.
You will take ownership of the entire development stack as it relates to testing and quality, including build systems, tools, dashboarding, and testing frameworks. You will identify and address performance bottlenecks within both the product and development processes, while building scalable solutions to enhance system reliability and ensure smooth CI integrations. By doing so, you will help deliver more reliable products to our customers and significantly boost the engineering team's productivity across the company.
You Will

  • Build automated testing infrastructure that spans hardware and emulator environments, improving the development process and reducing friction for developers.
  • Innovate to amplify the efficiency of our mobile and web developers by optimizing testing tools, build systems, and CI pipelines.
  • Identify and address critical performance bottlenecks in both the product and the development and testing workflows, including build times, testing frameworks, and IDE integrations.
  • Collaborate with Mobile Engineering, Quality Systems, and Developer Experience teams to deliver efficient automated tests that mirror real-world scenarios, ensuring that our products meet the highest quality standards.
  • Prioritize and improve development and testing processes to allow engineers to build, test, and release features quickly and effortlessly.
  • Contribute to the quality automation footprint by developing solutions that scale across all Square platforms, including Point of Sale applications and other Square products.

You Have

  • 8+ years of experience in software and test engineering for embedded devices.
  • Experience with programming languages like Python, Kotlin, and Java for Android development.
  • Proficient in frameworks and tools such as Tradefed and Android Debug tooling.
  • Familiar with RESTful APIs and CI systems (e.g., Jenkins, Gradle).
  • Experience with the full mobile development life cycle.
  • Inspire our engineering team to enhance the reliability and performance of our mobile and web applications.
  • Experienced in optimizing performance tests and designing test automation frameworks.
  • Experience in large-scale, long-term projects within sizable engineering organizations.
