As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Avatar & Expression team, you will lead engineering efforts that scale Roblox Avatars and build the backend that delivers customizable avatars to numerous platforms and devices.

The team designs all backend services for Avatars on the Roblox Platform, builds the architecture to increase scale, avatar quality, and functionality and creates new services that make developers more efficient and productive.

With over 90 million daily active users (and growing), we are looking for an experienced engineer to join us that's passionate about designing and building scalable distributed systems.

You Will:

  • Build the backend that delivers customizable avatars to multiple platforms & devices
  • Create new services from scratch using micro-service architecture that contributes to company revenue and affects millions of users globally
  • Work with other avatar teams to build new services crucial for both increasing avatar quality and improving client-side runtime performance
  • Support our Avatar in production, sharing the on-call rotation with your team colleagues
  • Write high-quality, performant code, and refactor and improve our existing codebase
  • Improve system reliability, performance, and test coverage
  • Report to an Engineering Manager on our Avatar Core Services Team.

You Have:

  • Led engineering efforts to grow backend system to handle a large number of concurrent users
  • Broken down product requirements into iterative deliverable stages with a history of successful execution & delivery
  • Strong experience in large-scale, data-driven architecture, and API design
  • First-hand tech lead experience and have helped team members reach their technical potential
  • An experienced backend engineer with 3+ years of work experience
  • A Computer-Science graduate or MS graduate

For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits.

Annual Salary Range

$189,110$233,840 USD

Roles that are based in our San Mateo, CA Headquarters are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional in-office on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).

Employees engage in a combination of remote and on-site work.

We are requiring employees to be in the office three days a week – with core days being Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Mondays and Fridays, employees may choose to work remotely, although the office will still be open.
