We are hiring a Senior Quality Engineer, where you will play a key role in embedding quality throughout our ecosystem to ensure a reliable, inclusive, and high-performing content creation and reader experience.

Why it matters: At Axios, quality is more than just testing—it’s a core engineering mindset. The Quality Engineering (QE) team plays a key role in embedding quality throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring our products meet the high expectations of our readers and stakeholders. As a Senior Quality Engineer, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to proactively identify risk, drive test strategies, and advocate for scalable quality practices.

Go deeper: The Senior Quality Engineer’s responsibility is to ensure Axios’ products align with our business needs and maintain stability, predictability, and resilience throughout the publishing lifecycle. Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Shift-left testing: Actively participate in grooming, design reviews, and risk assessments to embed quality early in the development process.
  • Define test strategies: Collaborate with product managers and engineers to ensure comprehensive test coverage across functional, integration, performance, and accessibility testing.
  • Automation-first mindset: Design, implement, and maintain scalable automated tests, ensuring an optimal balance between automation and strategic manual testing.
  • Bug and defect management: Identify, log, track, and drive resolution of defects, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders.
  • Performance & observability: Leverage metrics, dashboards, and analytics to monitor product quality and proactively identify issues before they impact users.
  • Continuous improvement: Contribute to quality process refinements and mentor application development engineers on testing best practices.

The details: The ideal candidate is a technical leader with a collaborative, problem-solving mindset who embodies Axios’ quality-first culture. You should have:

  • 5+ years of experience in quality engineering or software testing
  • Proficiency in test automation using tools like Cypress and UI component validation tools like Storybook
  • Experience testing web applications in agile development environments
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to champion and articulate quality engineering principles across teams
  • A commitment to fostering collaboration, embracing continuous learning, and proactively solving challenges

We’ll be even more excited if you have:

  • Experience integrating AI or AI-driven tooling into quality engineering workflows, such as AI-assisted test generation, defect prediction, or automation optimization
  • Strong understanding of API and unit testing, performance testing, and observability practices
  • Familiarity with SEO & Accessibility testing and tools like Lighthouse, Axe, or WAVE

About our Quality Chapter: As a QE, you'll be an active member of our Quality Chapter, the group that unifies and aligns quality efforts across teams, ensuring consistency, shared learning, and collaboration.

Our vision is to establish a stable and predictable delivery ecosystem that supports our Product and Engineering department in delivering exceptional experiences by serving as leaders, experts, and advocates of integrated quality strategies.

Our mission is to embed quality at the core of every stage of development by building robust testing frameworks, advancing shift-left practices, and fostering a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility. We are committed to delivering reliable and inclusive reader experiences through proactive risk mitigation, continuous feedback loops, and data-driven decision-making.

The bottom line: At Axios, we believe quality is everyone’s responsibility—and as a Senior Quality Engineer, you’ll be a champion of that vision, ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our readers.
