Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, technically proficient, and experienced Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers focused on the Credit Risk Portfolio Management area within our Risk Engineering organization. This is a critical role in building a modern, cloud-based technology ecosystem that will enable WEX to be more agile, faster to market, and open to emerging business opportunities, while prioritizing regulations, policy, and risk mitigation. We are building a powerful platform for risk operation & management, credit underwriting & management, and finance risk operation & management, leveraging our Data Platform and AI Platform, open source technologies, and vendor platforms. This role will specifically focus on the systems and tools used to manage WEX's complex credit risk portfolio, encompassing a huge credit exposure across all of WEX’s various business lines and a massive volume of credit accounts.

This Sr. Engineering Manager will report to the Sr. Director of Risk Engineering and can be located in Chicago, Portland, Maine (Wex HQ), Boston, or the San Francisco Bay Area. The ideal candidate will have experience in the credit risk domain, a proven track record of leading engineering teams, strong technical skills, excellent project management abilities, and outstanding communication skills. They will thrive in a fast-paced environment and be passionate about delivering high-quality software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers dedicated to the development and maintenance of the Credit Risk Portfolio Management systems, to make sure the technical soundness and that the systems can serve the business growing needs well

  • Grow the engineering team and talents, including attracting high talents and growing existing talents on the team.

  • Collaborate closely with credit risk product and credit risk compliance teams to understand business problems and requirements and translate them into technical solutions.

  • Own the technical design, development, testing, and deployment of features and enhancements within the Credit Risk Portfolio Management area.

  • Ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of the systems under your responsibility.

  • Champion engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD).

  • Mentor and coach engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and growth.

  • Contribute to the overall architecture and strategy of the Risk platform.

  • Partner with other engineering teams to ensure seamless integration with other systems.

  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.

  • Communicate regularly with stakeholders on project status and progress.

  • Drive the adoption of new technologies and approaches to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team.

  • Partner with the security and SRE teams to ensure the security and stability of the platform.

  • Set clear, measurable quality goals for the team in a data-driven way.

  • Uphold strong DORA metrics across the team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 10+ years of software design and development experience, with 3+ years of experience leading and managing engineering teams in a hands-on way.

  • Strong technical skills in software development (e.g. architecture design, coding, testing, production monitoring), including experience with modern programming languages and frameworks.

  • Experience with cloud technologies (AWS or Azure preferred) and containerization (Kubernetes).

  • Deep understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.

  • Experience in the credit risk domain, particularly in portfolio management, is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with data and ML/AI concepts and their application to risk management.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to build and motivate high-performing teams.

  • Strong ownership and accountability, always looking for improvement opportunities.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  

  • Experience working in an Agile environment and combined engineering.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
