The Role

Hello, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Our flagship office is in Sydney, Australia, but we've made our way from down under, to a hub San Francisco, which is now home to our US operations.

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve. We are seeking a Global Payroll Compliance Lead to join our team, who will be responsible for ensuring compliance with payroll laws, regulations, and policies across all countries of operation. This role will collaborate closely with business partners and payroll service providers to establish standardized and streamlined payroll setups to facilitate faster market entry and support the company's global expansion initiatives.
At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Lead and mentor a team of payroll professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture while championing a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, regional, and international payroll laws, tax regulations, and employment standards in all countries of operation.
  • Establishing and maintaining payroll compliance policies and procedures that align with both legal requirements and internal guidelines.
  • Staying up-to-date with changes in payroll regulations, tax laws, and labor laws across all relevant jurisdictions and updating internal business partners accordingly.
  • Conducting regular audits and risk assessments of payroll processes to identify potential compliance issues or areas for improvement.
  • Overseeing the accurate and timely submission of payroll-related reports to government agencies and other relevant authorities.
  • Ensuring that employee payroll data is handled and protected in compliance with data privacy laws, such as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).
  • Collaborating effectively with various departments, including People, Legal, and Tax, to address and resolve payroll compliance matters.
  • Overseeing third-party payroll service providers, ensuring they meet compliance standards.
  • Conducting training sessions for payroll teams and other relevant departments to ensure understanding and adherence to compliance policies.
  • Addressing any compliance-related issues or discrepancies that may arise and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Working with leadership to develop and implement a global payroll strategy that aligns with business objectives and ensures compliance across the organization.

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Global Payroll Management Institute (GPMI) certifications is a plus.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with a proven track record of building high-performing teams.
  • Extensive experience in payroll management, compliance, and international payroll operations.
  • In-depth understanding of payroll regulations, tax laws, and employment standards in multiple countries and regions, including global payroll best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify compliance risks, conduct audits, and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and senior management.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and adapt quickly to evolving payroll compliance requirements.
  • Experience in working with third-party payroll vendors and managing vendor relationships.
  • Familiarity with payroll systems, software, and technology used to manage global payroll operations.
