Company Overview

Qualys is a leading provider of cloud-based security and compliance solutions, processing vast amounts of data to help our global customers secure their networks, devices, and applications. As we continue to expand, we’re looking for a Senior Manager, Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) to lead our database teams and help ensure the ongoing performance, reliability, and scalability of our mission-critical data infrastructure.

Position Summary

In this role, you will lead and manage a globally distributed DBRE team responsible for the performance, availability, and security of our large-scale database environments. Our technology stack includes Oracle, OpenSearch, Cassandra, Kafka, Redis, Ceph, Janusgraph, and more. You should have hands-on expertise with two or more of these technologies and be comfortable guiding your team in adopting new tools and practices to streamline day-to-day operations.

You will partner closely with cross-functional teams—Development/Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Infrastructure, Networking, and Support—to optimize database environments and ensure all systems meet or exceed service-level objectives. This position reports to the Director or VP of Engineering (depending on company structure) and requires 4+ years of management experience leading teams across multiple regions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Management

  • Directly oversee and mentor a global DBRE team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.

  • Manage staffing needs, including recruiting and retaining top talent, conducting performance reviews, and supporting team members’ career growth.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within and across teams.

  • Strategic Planning & Execution

  • Define and implement the long-term strategy for database reliability, ensuring alignment with business objectives.

  • Drive projects from inception to completion—coordinating with stakeholders, setting milestones, and ensuring timely, high-quality deliveries.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and tools that can enhance the reliability and performance of our databases.

  • Database & Infrastructure Management

  • Provide expert oversight of installation, configuration, and performance tuning for Oracle, OpenSearch, Cassandra, Kafka, Redis, Ceph, and/or Janusgraph in multi-data-center deployments.

  • Ensure best practices are followed for database security, backups, disaster recovery, and storage management.

  • Collaborate with architecture teams to design and maintain high-availability, fault-tolerant systems.

  • Performance Tuning & Optimization

  • Guide the team in identifying performance bottlenecks, diagnosing issues, and implementing remediation strategies.

  • Develop and track critical KPIs for database health, capacity, and performance, ensuring transparency and accountability.

  • Automation & Innovation

  • Champion the use of automation frameworks (Ansible, Jenkins, Git, Grafana, etc.) to streamline repetitive tasks, reduce human error, and improve system reliability.

  • Encourage the adoption of DevOps and agile practices, promoting continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Support

  • Work closely with SRE, Infrastructure, and Networking teams to maintain optimal infrastructure configurations, reliability, and uptime.

  • Partner with Support and Customer Success teams to address production issues, maintain SLAs, and ensure exceptional customer experiences.

  • Communicate complex technical concepts to executives and other non-technical stakeholders to facilitate decision-making.

  • Cloud Integration (Nice-to-Have)

  • Leverage knowledge of OCI or other public cloud platforms to optimize database deployments in hybrid or cloud-native environments.

Our Work Environment

  • Collaborative & Transparent: We use virtual collaboration and pairing tools to share ideas openly. Siloed work is discouraged—teamwork is our strength.

  • Agile & Flexible: We focus on delivering incremental value, adapting processes only when they serve our goals.

  • Diverse & Inclusive: We believe in building teams with diverse perspectives, which fuels creativity and innovative problem-solving.

  • People-Focused: Our people are our most valuable asset. We invest in personal growth and align individual strengths to company objectives.

Qualifications

  • Education:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.

  • Management & Leadership Experience:

  • 4+ years of experience managing teams (preferably DBRE, SRE, or similar) across multiple regions, with a track record of coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

  • Technical Expertise:

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience working with SQL & NoSQL databases in production.

  • Proficiency in at least two of the following technologies: Oracle, OpenSearch, Cassandra, Kafka, Redis, Ceph, Janusgraph.

  • Strong understanding of database performance optimization, backup and recovery, and real-time data synchronization.

  • Tooling & Automation:

  • Working knowledge of Ansible, Jenkins, Git, Grafana, or equivalent tools for automation, CI/CD, and monitoring.

  • Soft Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills, especially in high-pressure production environments.

  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with tactical execution, prioritizing tasks for maximum impact.

  • Innovation & Adaptability:

  • Demonstrated passion for learning new technologies and methodologies to stay ahead of industry trends.

  • Experience working in an agile environment with frequent releases and iterative improvements.

Why Join Us?

  • Leadership Impact: Shape the vision and direction of our global DBRE team, driving innovation and operational excellence.

  • Cutting-Edge Technology: Work on the latest and most robust data solutions that power our security and compliance platform.

  • Professional Growth: Access abundant opportunities for learning and career development within a fast-growing organization.

  • Inclusive Culture: Join a diverse team that values open communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Competitive Compensation: We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, retirement, and more.
