Job Description
Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.
Hello, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.
Where and how you can work
Our flagship office is in Sydney, Australia, but we've made our way from down under, to our brand new office in San Francisco, which is now home to our US operations. This role can be based in either location. We trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.
What you'd be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Being a Senior Legal Counsel with the Product and Privacy team, you will take the lead on product counselling for our GenAI Supergroup and AI projects in our Design Experience group. The engineering and product managers in these groups are based mainly across Australia and Vienna.
  • You'll also help support our AI governance initiatives, working closely with an AI governance focussed lawyer on the team on training and resources to empower our AI teams to deliver great products safely and efficiently.
  • You will help deliver impactful goals, remove blockers for the business and facilitate escalations to leadership of key risks.
  • Support Canva's mission to become the most trusted platform by keeping the team accountable for their goals that reduce risk. Balancing this against Canva's ambitious growth goals, industry practices and our risk appetite and ensuring leadership is "risk aware, not risk averse".
  • Provide regular training, FAQS, cheat sheets, process documents and guardrails for AI product and engineering teams and where required, US based sales teams so they can operate with low friction in their day to day work.
  • Monitor and report on the AI landscape - both regulatory and industry practices.
  • Regularly contribute to the product, AI and privacy risk registers.
  • Based in San Francisco, you'll also be the eyes and ears for the Product and Privacy team in San Francisco, where many of our most senior leaders and Canvanauts in sales and marketing are based. This will allow you to spot a broad range of legal risks and support them or bring in other team members or legal specialities to support. For this reason, knowledge of the US privacy, consumer protection and marketing laws will be highly regarded (e.g. CCPA, CAN-SPAM, COPPA)

You're probably a match if you have

  • Hands on experience at or for a rapidly growing global technology company, advising AI and product launches
  • Deep expertise in the EU AI Act, privacy and intellectual property risks of AI and hands on experience advising businesses on foundational AI models
  • Understanding of common industry practices and a pragmatic approach to risk based on likelihood, consequences and balancing non-legal risks
  • You are comfortable working for a global company and managing timezones. While we encourage async communication, zoom calls out of business hours will be required to connect with the teams you support and collaborate with. You'll also play a critical role being available to advise on security incidents during US business hours and be on our pager.
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional and AI Governance Professional preferred or commitment to obtain certifications within 3 months of joining

About the team
The Product and Privacy Legal team at Canva plays a crucial role in ensuring that our products comply with legal standards and privacy regulations. They number close to twenty, and are based all over the world, from Australia, through the UK and onto the US. This role will be based in the San Francisco, California and will be advising on Canva's AI products, as well as supporting Canvanauts based in the US (largely in sales, marketing, AI and ecosystem).
