About the role:

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead one (or two) of the Grafana Frontend squads. Our managers take an active role in creating a productive environment for our engineers; be it through removing blockers and impediments, facilitating cross-team collaboration and understanding, or by aiding the team in helping themselves by constantly improving and refining their working practices. You’ll be responsible for managing a team of engineers working on core Grafana features and experience, helping them to perform at their best.

The Grafana Frontend team is responsible for the end to end user experience on Grafana the observability product and Grafana the platform used by many engineers to build plugins. Our squads are responsible for dashboards, data visualisation and manipulation, navigation across the ecosystem, sharing experience, content search, organisation and more.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. You’ll have an opportunity to work across the Grafana department and partner with others across the company in driving innovation and solving complex problems. Come and join us if you’re passionate about anything and everything Grafana, observability, and OSS.

What we seek:

  • You have a strong technical background and are capable of engaging in technical conversations and challenging teams to arrive at strong technical decisions themselves
  • You are comfortable working with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision making, be it technical or product focussed
  • Some customer facing experience will help, as interacting with customers will occasionally occur
  • Ideally you have a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience from having worked as an engineer before moving into Management.
  • You have enough technical skills/understanding of our React/TypeScript stack to manage a highly technical team/product.
  • You will act as project manager as well as working with cross-functional peers in Product management and Product Design to ensure the product roadmap is defined and up-to-date
  • You’re great with people and adept at managing relationships, you are able to hit the right balance between empathy and giving candid feedback to help your team members grow
  • You still keep up-to-date with the latest technical trends and shifts in order to maintain and enhance your understanding of the challenges your teams face.
  • You have a good understanding of a software development process that takes a user-centered approach.
  • You’re experienced in Cloud-first delivery practices, promoting continuous automated testing and feature toggles as ways to mitigate risk.
  • You’re familiar with being on-call and performing operational tasks with the use of runbooks.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Regular 1:1s to ensure your direct reports are motivated, happy and engaged
  • Coaching and mentoring of your direct reports
  • Providing continuous feedback to engineers to ensure that they can add value while maintaining high standards
  • Contributing to and reviewing design documents for upcoming features
  • Performing project management tasks to ensure successful incremental delivery
  • Regular collaboration with Product Management and Product Design peers
  • Ensuring features are well-defined and ready for development
  • Advising your reports on how to break down features into tasks
  • Collaborating with our Engineering Leaders to help define and influence product strategy, roadmaps and technical designs
  • Maintaining headcount by working with our People Ops team to attract and hire talent
  • Being an active member of our on-call rota for Grafana Frontend

What we use

Our tech stack is mostly made up of services written in Go, running on multiple Kubernetes clusters. The frontend layer is written in React/TypeScript and we use Jest and Cypress for our testing needs. As for CICD, we use Github Actions.
