Position Description:
Calico is seeking a Scientist to join our multi-disciplinary Protein Sciences team with a focus on applying biochemistry techniques, protein biophysical characterization, and assay development to support projects relevant to human aging and disease. The candidate will work closely with protein biochemists to gain mechanistic understanding of protein targets and potential therapeutics. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, detail-oriented, work autonomously with a variety of experimental techniques, and be comfortable presenting results to cross-functional teams.
Position Requirements:
- PhD in Biochemistry or related discipline, with demonstrated ability to develop assays and interpret biophysical characterization data for protein-based interactions
- Experience with protein-small molecule binding characterization highly preferred
- Strong expertise with protein based biophysical binding and competition assays (Biacore, Octet, ITC, TSA, etc.) and proficiency in handling related instruments
- Experience with biochemical and/or biophysical assays in 96- or 384- well formats is desired (ELISA, TR-FRET, Fluorescence Polarization, etc.)
- Experience with analytical techniques in protein sciences (Light scattering, LC-MS, HPLC)
- Strong teamwork and proactive communication skills
- Independent, accountable, meticulous attention to detail, and able to multitask
- Strong communication and organizational skills to interact with collaborators
- Must be willing to work onsite five days per week
Nice to Have:
- Experience with cell culture and expression of recombinant proteins in bacteria, insect and mammalian cells
- Experience with protein purification (affinity, IEX and SEC) and assessing protein purity using SDS-PAGE
- Experience with enzymatic assays and kinetics models
- Experience with protein labeling and conjugation chemistries
- Experience with assay development and automation/liquid handlers
The estimated base salary range for this role is $135,000 - $145,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
