At Unlearn, our purpose is to advance artificial intelligence (AI) to eliminate trial and error in medicine. We are innovating advanced machine learning methods to leverage generative AI in forecasting patient outcomes, starting with the domain of clinical trials. We produce AI-generated digital twins of individual trial participants, enabling smaller and more efficient clinical trials to bring effective medicines to patients sooner.

Our innovative work in AI today will reinvent how AI is applied in medicine tomorrow — and we have a top secret plan for how to get there. We won’t be able to achieve this mission just by applying technologies created by others; the future must be invented.

Unlearn is a technology company, not a biotech company. We use computers, not pipettes. We make and use software, we don’t discover or make drugs. We believe that AI will define the future of medicine, and we aren’t deterred by naysayers or skeptics.

We come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from machine learning to marketing—but regardless of where we come from, Unlearners share some common traits:

  • ; we aren’t intimidated by big, challenging goals.

  • ; we break down our big goals into smaller chunks and meet as often as necessary to track our velocity and iterate quickly.

  • ; we never give up, setbacks just make us try harder.

  • ; in fact, we hate being stuck with the status quo

  • ; sharing information with each other and with the world is super important, too important to be boring. And, last but not least,

  • ; we put the mission first, the company second, the team third, and individuals last.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Unlearn was founded in 2017 by a team of world-class machine learning scientists. We have raised venture capital from top tier investors such as Altimeter, Insight Partners, Radical Ventures, 8VC, DCVC, and DCVC Bio, and recently completed our $50 million Series C in January 2024.

The Role

We are looking for a software engineer who can support the development of Unlearn’s software suite of statistical methods that are used in our products, including software that is submitted for regulatory review and validation.

This role will collaborate closely with data scientists and statisticians to build out robust software and services that deliver solutions powered by Unlearn’s digital twins technology. The ideal candidate will have strong software engineering skills and scientific programming experience in both R and Python.

Responsibilities

  • You will develop software to help the speed with which Unlearn can release statistical methods for use in trial analyses or other solutions delivered through Unlearn’s Digital Twins Platform.

  • You will develop a system to use statistical methods to provide evaluation pipelines and production databases for data required for the Digital Twins Platform.

  • You will develop software that will be submitted for regulatory validation.

  • You will partner closely with research statisticians and data scientists to establish a culture of engineering excellence in our clinical methods development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Expertise in programming in both R and Python.

  • Experience with statistical simulation and computation.

  • Experience developing reliable and maintainable software that is well-tested, modular, explainable.

  • Experience delivering robust software packages to customers.

  • Familiarity with modern engineering best practices and processes, including agile development methodologies, version control systems (e.g. git, GitHub).

  • Ability to debug problems that span systems and design solutions that span the whole stack.

  • Strong product thinking abilities to understand customer needs and translate those insights into innovative technical solutions.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to execute and deliver software projects independently.

  • Energized by focusing on the needs of our users, both internal and external.

  • Ability to work in our San Francisco office 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).
