Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

We are looking for a passionate and motivated Product Specialist to join Planet’s Natural Lands team. This team is at the forefront of Planet’s mission to empower organizations with data to combat some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, including mitigating climate change, slowing deforestation, and reducing wildfire risk. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of cutting-edge technology, environmental science, and impactful industry applications, helping Planet deliver on its vision of using space to improve life on Earth.

As the Product Specialist, you will work closely with two of Planet’s product and engineering pods focused on delivering cutting-edge forest carbon and wildfire data layers. These innovative data products leverage Planet’s satellite imagery to drive sustainable forestry practices, advance carbon offset programs, and improve wildfire preparedness and response.

You will be the key link between Planet’s technical teams and its customers. This role comprises two main functions: (A) contributing to the ongoing development of forest carbon and wildfire data products as the conduit between product and customers, and (B) supporting Planet’s sales, partnerships, and customer success teams as the product expert in client-facing activities. Your collaboration with Planet teams and customers will be instrumental in helping craft compelling, data-driven narratives that demonstrate the value of Planet’s products to the Natural Lands sectors.

Beyond customer engagement, your work will involve hands-on data analysis and storytelling. You will develop figures, reports, and workflows that highlight the transformative potential of Planet’s products. Your contributions will not only support customer conversations and marketing efforts but may also feed directly into the production workflows that shape how Planet’s data products are used globally.

This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work in our San Francisco HQ 2 days per week.

Impact You'll Own:

  • Act as the subject matter expert on Planet’s forest carbon and wildfire data products, staying up to date on roadmaps, technical developments, and timelines by attending weekly pod meetings.
  • Collaborate with the sales team and join customer calls to provide technical expertise and communicate product value propositions effectively.
  • Create customer feedback loop to provide product development insights
  • Work closely with data to perform analyses, create visualizations, and develop reports for customer meetings, marketing materials, or production workflows. For example, developing and running an analysis of historical forest degradation that compares the performance of Planet’s data products to public data over the Amazon basin.
  • Contribute to the development of operational workflows and content showcasing the utility of Planet’s products for the Natural Lands vertical.

What You Bring:

  • A background in forest science, wildfire science, or related fields.
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience analyzing geospatial data, particularly for forest or wildfire applications.
  • Proficiency in Python and data science tools for analysis and visualization, particularly geospatial python packages and workflows (e.g. GDAL, rasterio, shapely, etc)
  • Familiarity with software development workflows (though extensive software engineering expertise is not required).
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with and appreciation for creating and delivering value to customers and/or partners in a commercial setting.
  • Solid understanding of machine learning or image analysis
  • Experience with version control and Git

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Experience engaging directly with customers in a technical capacity, preferably in support of sales and/or partnership functions in a commercial context.
  • Knowledge of carbon markets, wildfire risk assessment, or forest management practices.
  • Experience developing or working with operational workflows based on geospatial data products.
