As we expand our product line internationally, we are hiring a mid-level attorney with experience (i) advising product and engineering teams building products across multiple jurisdictions; and (ii) advising international marketing teams. In this role, you will provide international legal support to a passionate and enthusiastic team of global business partners, and advise teams developing creative and compliant commercial and consumer products and marketing for restaurants, staff, and guests. This role will allow you to lend legal expertise on existing products and expose you to totally new ones, and you’ll do everything in a fun and collaborative environment that values your insights, creative thinking, and intellectual curiosity. 

As Product & Marketing Counsel, you will work with multiple teams across the business including the product, engineering, marketing, and compliance teams. You will develop a deep understanding of Toast’s products, strategies, and processes in order to offer pragmatic legal advice and help the business identify and mitigate potential legal risks specifically outside of the US. Being that this is a global role, you also must have flexibility liaising with partners in various timezones internationally.


About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Working alongside and advising a variety of stakeholders across the product, engineering, and marketing teams throughout the product development lifecycle (i.e. from the initial stages of product development through launch, including the review of marketing strategies and assets) for products launching in the US, Canada, Ireland, UK, and other geos as Toast expands into new markets and iterate and launch new products in existing markets.
  • Helping build a playbook for Product Legal to support Toast’s international expansion into new territories.
  • Providing practical advice to business stakeholders on a broad range of issues including product and regulatory compliance, advertising and marketing law compliance, consumer protection, intellectual property and privacy, various contracts
  • Advising international marketing and content teams on customer-facing marketing and editorial content.  
  • Understanding and staying up to date on international laws and regulations relating to the Toast platform.
  • Thinking creatively to navigate complex regulatory environments to ensure a smooth and compliant user experience.  
  • Partnering collaboratively across multiple functions, exhibiting a deep understanding of how Toast products work and how their evolution is influenced by applicable laws and regulations. 


Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school, or the equivalent in your jurisdiction, and meet all professional and legal requirements necessary to practice law in your jurisdiction
  • 6+ years of legal experience, in areas covering regulatory compliance, privacy, marketing, intellectual property, and consumer protection across multiple jurisdictions.  
  • Expertise across all jurisdictions is not required, provided that you have experience with researching, interpreting, and advising on a variety of international laws.
  • In-house counsel experience advising product, engineering, and marketing teams on legal issues related to new product development, enhancements, and feature requests.
  • Significant experience in product, advertising, and marketing law compliance, specifically with laws and regulations related to commercial and consumer products and marketing materials.
  • Experience working with fast paced technology, software or fintech companies. 
  • A solution-oriented, customer service, and growth mindset.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas in a succinct and impactful manner.
  • The ability to integrate into cross-functional teams with a cooperative and participatory approach.

  • Experience advising on the laws of the UK, Canada,  Ireland, and/or other EU member states.

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.

Pay Range

$160,000$195,000 USD
