The Role
Who We Are

Verkada is the largest cloud-based B2B physical security platform company in the world. Only Verkada offers six product lines — video security cameras, access control, environmental sensors, alarms, workplace and intercoms — integrated with a single cloud-based software platform.

Designed with simplicity and scalability in mind, Verkada gives organizations the real-time insight to know what could impact the safety and comfort of people throughout their physical environment, while empowering them to take immediate action to minimize security risks, workplace frustrations and costly inefficiencies.

Founded in 2016 with more than $460M in funding raised to date, Verkada has expanded rapidly with 16 offices across three continents, 1,900+ full-time employees and 25,000+ customers across 70+ countries.

As an Industrial Design Intern at Verkada, you’ll design and develop cameras, access control systems, sensors, and other connected devices alongside our growing team of designers and hardware engineers. You will provide creative vision from initial concept through to mass production. You’ll maintain and evolve Verkada’s product design language by creating solutions that emulate our core brand principles, reduce product complexity, and deliver premium experiences for our customers. This is an extraordinary opportunity to work closely with a diverse team of experienced designers, contribute to the creation of state-of-the-art products, and gain invaluable experience in a dynamic tech environment. You’ll make a big impact — your designs will be a part of Verkada’s quickly expanding portfolio of products.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the visual and physical language of our brand through the design of our hardware.
  • Utilize user-centric thinking and keen aesthetic sensibility to align our brand to customer needs.
  • Support the design team in conducting research on user needs, market trends, and competitive analysis to inform product design decisions.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of product prototypes, participating in user testing and feedback sessions to iteratively improve designs.
  • Collaborate with our hardware engineering team to explore, prototype & test new product concepts to finalize form, CMF & UX.
  • Work closely with design, engineering, product management, and operations on complex technical programs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Stay current with the latest design trends, materials, manufacturing processes, and industry developments to bring the team fresh and innovative ideas.
  • Contribute concepts and problem-solving across multiple projects.

Requirements

  • A website or digital portfolio is required for consideration.
  • Senior-level industrial design students pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree, as well as recent ID graduates.
  • A positive attitude and proactive mentality to take initiative on design explorations and actively support team goals.
  • A high level of sensitivity to form and function, attention to detail, and conceptual clarity.
  • A generalist approach to technical skills: design strategy, customer insights, form development, sketching, physical prototyping at various levels of fidelity, package design, 3D modeling, and CMF exploration and selection.
  • Strong physical prototyping skills, particularly in 3d printing and working with wood and foam.
  • Proficient in 2D & 3D digital tools like Solidworks, Rhino, Fusion360, Keyshot, Adobe Suite, etc.
  • Experience working directly with mechanical and electrical engineers to solve problems in a collaborative team environment.
  • A strong understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and production timelines.
  • Ability to generate and communicate design vision, or embrace and extend existing solutions.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cameras, environmental sensors, control systems, sensor sub-assemblies, or connected devices
  • Experience designing products for harsh environments.
