As a Hardware Engineer at Toyota Research Institute, you will design, build, and test robotic prototypes, working closely with diverse teams. Your role includes developing documentation, conducting field tests, collaborating on system components, and using rapid prototyping technology.
The summary above was generated by AI

At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re on a mission to improve the quality of human life. We’re developing new tools and capabilities to amplify the human experience. To lead this transformative shift in mobility, we’ve built a world-class team in Energy & Materials, Human-Centered AI, Human Interactive Driving, Large Behavioral Models, and Robotics.

As a Hardware Engineer on the Prototyping and Research Operations (PROps) team, you will partner with research teams across TRI to design, build, and test novel prototypes as a part of TRI’s research mission. You will use your knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems to nurture projects in the design phase and see them through to completion in building and testing. On the PROps team, your work across TRI’s teams will allow you to advise processes and programs run by our team to accelerate research and development for Toyota. To thrive in this role beyond your technical skills, you must be self-directed, able to mentor and lead a diverse team of operations specialists and engineers, and use your organizational skills as a tool to guide open-ended projects to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in hardware development initiatives on the PROps team and contribute to the design and development of TRI’s research projects, focusing primarily on robotics.
  • Produce documentation for the assembly, manufacturing, and function of designed systems.
  • Participate in field test events to evaluate system performance and prepare and deliver reports on test results.
  • Develop prototypes and perform studies to identify and specify key system components, including sensors, circuit boards, and actuators. Design, bring up, and debug custom electrical sub-systems, including power systems, motor control and sensor interfaces, and the overall electrical system.
  • Partner with internal collaborators, external vendors, and contractors to develop, fabricate, and assemble sophisticated systems and subsystems.
  • Perform builds and tear-downs of deployment facilities and workstations. Assemble, as needed, the requisite components for testing and test infrastructure.
  • Assist in developing and documenting user manuals for existing prototypes, as well as documentation of new components and prototypes as they are developed.
  • Collaborate with Research Operations Engineers to design and coordinate events, field tests, and other deployments in support of the research and engineering teams.
  • Fabricate components for prototypes using rapid prototyping equipment (3D Printers, laser cutters, drill presses, saws, etc.)
  • Safely deploy and directly operate mobile robots and research equipment during deployment activities.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or higher in an engineering-related field, preferably electrical engineering, and 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with a full-stack approach to robotics, including familiarity with electromechanical systems and actuation, as well as practical software design.
  • Software engineering experience working with C++ and Python.
  • Experience building and deploying custom robotic systems to remote facilities.
  • Experience and a proven understanding of rapid prototyping techniques and experience designing for small-scale contract manufacturing and assembly.
  • An outstanding teammate with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time periodically, both international and domestic.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $139,776 and $209,664/year for California-based roles; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Note that TRI offers a generous benefits package (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave) and an annual cash bonus structure. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
