The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count.
We are seeking a principal-level full stack developer with strong UX and design skills to join our dynamic team and provide technical leadership. The ideal candidate will have a passion for creating intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces, the technical expertise to bring these designs to life, and the ability to mentor other developers. You will work closely with a diverse team of professionals, including scientists, to develop tools that support cutting-edge biological research at the boundary of artificial intelligence and sophisticated in-vitro models like organoids.
The Opportunity:

Lead and architect user-friendly and responsive web UI solutions using JavaScript/React/Apollo

Design and implement sophisticated GraphQL schemas and guide best practices

Develop and maintain backend systems with Node.js
-
Design and optimize SQL database schemas and queries for efficient data storage and retrieval
-
Contribute code to other cloud based services written in Python
-
Establish and maintain robust testing strategies and quality standards
-
Drive UX design vision and contribute to the overall design language and patterns across multiple products

Mentor junior developers in UI/UX best practices and technical implementation

Lead cross-functional collaboration with scientists to build innovative research tools

Provide technical leadership and guidance for complex project implementations

Identify and evaluate new technologies for potential adoption
Who You Are:
-
Proven track record of leading and delivering complex, user-friendly tools in a fast-paced environment
-
10+ years of experience with React and modern web technologies
-
At least 4 years of experience with Python and SQL
-
Advanced UX and design skills with a portfolio of successful user-centric designs
-
Expert proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, or similar
-
Extensive experience working with cloud-native architectures in public clouds (ideally AWS)

Excellent communication and leadership skills for collaborating with diverse teams

Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior developers

Strong technical writing skills for documentation and knowledge sharing

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Design, or related field
Preferred but not required:

Experience with biological data and processes is a strong plus

Experience leading technical teams in a research environment

Track record of driving technical innovation and process improvements
Onsite presence, on our South San Francisco campus, is expected for at least 3 days a week.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $162,600 - $302,000 of hiring range. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
