Company Description
Swiftly is on a mission to help cities move more efficiently. We are the leading transit data platform for agencies to share real-time passenger information, manage day-to-day operations, and improve service performance. Today, over 180 transit agencies in 11 countries – including LA Metro, MARTA, SEPTA, and MBTA – rely on Swiftly to improve on-time performance by up to 40% and increase passenger information accuracy by up to 50%. The result is better service reliability, increased ridership, and more efficient transit operations.
Engineering at Swiftly
Engineering at Swiftly is not only about writing code – we believe in creating empowered product teams that work together to conceptualize new features and bring them to life. Each team aims to strike a balance between delivering incremental improvements, creating prototypes to test new ideas and mitigate risks, and building scalable software using industry best practices. We’re guided by a mission to positively impact transit riders, and we embrace humility and intentionality in how we make technical decisions so that we best meet our customers’ needs.
About the Role
Swiftly is looking for an Engineering Manager to join a cross-functional product team enabling our transit agency customers to operate and manage on-vehicle embedded and IoT hardware devices. Your team’s work spans from cloud-native services interfacing with Swiftly’s core data engine through messaging brokers to devices running onboard public transit buses, trains, and ferries.
You will assume a player/coach role within this experienced team on the leading edge of what we do at Swiftly. You will leverage technical experience across cloud software and embedded hardware/IoT, people management experience, and team leadership experience to collaborate with team members on designs and solutions and contribute hands-on, all while emphasizing a great team culture. Your work will ultimately bring tangible, real-world-impacting products to transportation agencies and transit riders.
We encourage you to apply if you meet half or more of the requirements and are excited to learn about the rest. Above all else, we value candidates with a growth mindset, the aptitude to learn, and strong motivation to deliver impact to customers. If this is exciting to you, we'd love to talk!
This is a hybrid role based in downtown San Francisco. Because the role involves exploring, building, and testing hardware integrations, you will need to come to the office to work with hardware. This work comes in bursts, but expect 3 days per week on average in our office with 2-3x per year travel for customer site visits. At this time, we are unable to provide Visa sponsorship.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the team’s Engineers and Product Manager to understand customer needs, define impactful solutions, set milestones and goals, and deliver valuable products to market
- Contribute to our products hands-on and as a technical mentor/partner
- Ensure the team balances technical excellence and quality with rapid delivery and adjust as the team’s products evolve from early stage to scale
- Maintain our physical hardware lab in the office
- Help define and refine our onboard architecture and implementation processes, including through observational customer site visits and collaboration with partners
- Seek feedback and share progress, learnings, and blockers cross-functionally
- Manage team members with a focus on enabling a supportive, inclusive, growth-oriented, and outcome-focused culture on the team
- Create an environment where your direct reports are proud to work at Swiftly, as measured by employee retention and employee satisfaction scores
You'll be a good fit if
- You have experience in team leadership and people management, and you’re excited to balance those responsibilities with hands-on technical contributions
- You have experience ensuring the effective delivery of a complete solution. Bonus if it includes embedded hardware in the field
- You have experience building software to interface with cloud and edge-based (IoT) systems. Bonus if you have experience with our tech stack, which includes AWS IoT/ECS/ECR, MQTT, Postgres, Java, Python, Docker, Linux
- You have experience building real-time systems (e.g. socket communication, pub/sub systems, etc.)
- You have experience facilitating the discovery and delivery of product functionality through continuous learning, iterative de-risking, and making dynamic adjustments
- You have a team-first, empowering approach, enabling each team member to make an impact on team goals
- You seek and internalize feedback (a core Swiftly value!) and approach technical debates with humility
- You encourage blameless postmortems when things go wrong
- You are excited to be part of a mission-driven company improving public transit. Regardless of your why, it is important that you care about the work we do
