What We’re Building

Honeycomb is the observability platform for teams who manage software that matters. Send any data to our one-of-a-kind data store, solve problems with all the relevant context, and fix issues before your customers find them. Honeycomb is the unified, fast, and collaborative choice for engineering teams who care about customer experience to get the answers they need, quickly. We are passionate about consumer-quality developer tools and excited to build technology that raises our industry’s expectations of what our tools can do for us. We’re working with well known companies like HelloFresh, Slack, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard and more across a range of industries. This is an exciting time in our trajectory, as we’ve closed Series D funding, scaled past the 200-person mark, and were named to Forbes’ America’s Best Startups of 2022 and 2023!  If you want to see what we’ve been up to, please check out these blog posts and Honeycomb.io press releases.

Who We Are

We come for the impact, and stay for the culture! We’re a talented, opinionated, passionate, fiercely inclusive, and responsible group of bees. We have conviction and we strive to live our values every day. We want our people to do what they truly love amongst a team of highly talented (but humble) peers.

How We Work

We are a remote-first company, which means we believe it is not where you sit, but how you deliver that matters most. We invest in our people and care about how you orient to our culture and processes. At the same time we imbue a lot of trust, autonomy, and accountability from Day 1. #LI-Remote

A little more about the team

Lead the team that gives people deep insight into their systems.  This is where people answer deeply complicated questions about how their systems work so they can address them once and for all.

The Explore team is a full stack product engineering team at Honeycomb that’s responsible for critical user flows such as the primary query builder user interface along with the family of results generated with each query e.g. data visualizations, Bubble Up, traces page, and relevant APIs. The team works closely with the team that owns our custom data store and query engine to enable deep data analysis and exploration across all telemetry types. Check out our blog for more on some of our recent releases e.g. Relational Fields.

We are open to Manager and Senior Manager leveling for this role.

What you’ll do in the role:

Strategic thinking that moves mountains

Collaborate with your design and product peers to develop an impactful team strategy grounded in data and customer feedback.

Frame projects and prioritization around impact to the business and value for the users.

Lead with a sense of urgency and uphold high standards and expectations for your team by modeling them yourself.

Healthy and Inclusive team builder

Prioritize building a respectful, high-achieving, inclusive culture on the team.

Build systems that allow the team of 5-8 full stack engineers to be greater than the sum of their parts.

Coach and mentor engineers to own and achieve business impact as well as grow their technical skills

Model and maintain a high functioning team culture of mutual respect that promotes open dialogue

Courageous communicator and motivator

Empower people to be effective by explaining beneficial impact as well as delivering timely feedback

Know how to pick the right communication tool for the problem at hand (chat, video, email, etc.).

Value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and understand how good communication practices intersect with efforts to build a diverse and inclusive culture.

Develops self and others

Develop thoughtful and ambitious growth plans for each engineer that align with where they want to go in their career

Support midlevel engineers transition into senior and staff roles

Think like an owner

Gain a clear understanding of company priorities, and communicate those to the team, helping them prioritize and balance investments.

Foster a belief in your team that we all come to the table with positive intent towards Honeycomb’s overall success.

Cultivate new, relevant ideas by ensuring the team has enough context and agency to know where it’s worth being creative.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • You have some experience leading a high-performing team of engineers, including managing and shipping cross-functional or multi-team projects. You set people up to ship iteratively and are excited to support and grow empowered teams through a blend of psychological safety and positive accountability.
  • You live and breathe collaboration with product and design to understand the larger business context and frame projects and prioritization around impact to the business and users. You structure work around tight feedback loops with customers. A strong candidate for this role would be familiar with triad-based collaboration and design thinking.  Bonus points if you are familiar with the Product Management philosophies of people like Marty Cagan and Teresa Torres.
  • You have demonstrated experience with balancing priorities that complement, or conflict, with one another. This team has so much high impact work in front of it. A strong candidate understands different types of needs and weaves them into a cohesive strategy that balances short and long term impact with stability and system health.
  • You understand the value of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team and bring that lens to your work as a leader in hiring, team culture, and beyond. We are trying to raise the standards for developer tools, and we know that a diverse, inclusive, equitable team will help us build better products for a larger swath of the industry.
  • You’re practiced at helping your team grow and build their career paths. In this role, you’ll be in close conversation with your team on their career development and growth plans, helping them shape their career paths as well as understand how their work fits into the big picture of Honeycomb’s business goals.
  • You are comfortable with the pace and trade offs of a growth stage startup (meaning: know how to take care of yourself and your team, get your work done without working around the clock, prioritize ruthlessly, be able to tolerate a little uncertainty and sometimes wear different hats).

What You Get When You Join The Hive!

  • Base pay (range) of $195,000 - $210,000 USD, CAD $256,716 - CAD $288,446 (Manager); $215,000 to $235,000 USD, CAD $295,313 - CAD $322,784 (Senior Manager)
