About Us

The Athletic is a direct-to-consumer digital sports media company committed to helping subscribers experience storytelling in a whole new way. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Francisco, The Athletic has more than 575 full-time employees and covers more than 250 professional sports and collegiate teams in the US, Canada and the UK. The Athletic’s newsroom has produced thousands of in-depth articles along with more than 120 podcasts and premium video content.

About the Role

The Athletic is rapidly innovating in the world of journalism. We've developed a high quality subscription product that users love enough to give us a 4.9 rating in the App Store, and we see best in class retention rates when it's time for users to renew their subscription. We're building a product that users love and we want to keep growing it. That's where you come in!

As a full-stack engineer on our Growth team, you will get to work on all aspects of growth: Payments, sign up flow, optimizing pages for SEO and page load time, conversion funnels, new acquisition channels, and product features related to the new user experience. Our work will be highly experimental and iterative: we’ll develop clear hypotheses, run experiments, analyze them, and repeat the cycle. Our engineers work closely with our product team, and you'll be trusted and encouraged to dream up and try out your own ideas and experiments. You will be joining a team of generalists and will have the opportunity to work on the whole stack: frontend, backend, database, and APIs.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Product team to implement growth-related features and experiments on the website and in our backend APIs
  • Suggest and prototype product improvements and features aimed at growing our subscriber base
  • Architect and build solutions that take into account performance, growth, scalability, ease of future development, and code quality
  • Investigate, debug, and fix user-reported production issues
  • Work with team to influence technology direction

Requirements

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and desire to work in fast-paced, growth environment
  • 2+ years full-stack engineering development
  • Experience delivering products working across the stack—you’re comfortable building the backend, frontend, and designing the data persistence layer
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or relevant discipline
  • Experience with PHP, HTML, CSS, jQuery & MySQL (or desire to learn)
  • This role will be based out of our San Francisco headquarters
