Motional builds state-of-the-art fully autonomous vehicles. Building across software, hardware, vehicle, and cloud solutions for the car. The Drive-by-wire / Trajectory tracking and control team works on control algorithms deliver robust high performance to vehicle control of different vehicle platforms provided by OEMs, embedded controller hardware bring up, and safety features (system health monitoring, backup controls when failure happens, redundant system design) to meet ASIL-D standards for autonomous driving.
Role responsibilities:
- Leads and continuously develops a high performing Controls team that demonstrates Motional’s core values
- Deliver a 2023+ autonomous driving trajectory tracking system from design, prototyping, testing, deployment, to production.
- Self motivation to generate new ideas, provide a vision for the team and our system.
- Provide technical leadership to make consequential decisions on architectural direction, strategic investments, tactical execution and technical debt reduction.
- Lead from a strong technical background in software engineering best practices.
- Be a mentor, provide feedback (technical, professional) to team members, and work with project managers to roadmap and execute plans on schedule.
- Apply practical and rigorous engineering methods.
- Identify technical requirements, collaborating with partnering teams and drive completion of features and projects
- Understand and explain trade-offs, complex concepts to peers and leaders to drive decisions.
- Oversee the development and optimization of estimators to observe relevant vehicle states and disturbances.
- Oversee the development of vehicle dynamics models
- Implement/review algorithms and code.
What we're looking for:
- Experience leading a team of 10+ Engineers in a value driven organization
- 10+ years of experience implementing vehicle controllers, based on classical and modern control theory.
- Experience bringing a new product to commercial market
- Thorough understanding of linear/non-linear control theory (MPC, LQR, PID, etc), kinematics, and mechanical system dynamics is preferred.
- Experience in the design, implementation, and tuning of real-time trajectory tracking controllers for real time vehicle control.
- Experience in vehicle control algorithms in an autonomous vehicle for on-road and simulation tests.
- Experience with embedded C development
- Experience with large codebase C++ development
- Experience in implementing, using, debugging high-fidelity dynamical simulators
- Experience with system identification and model development using ML methods.
- Familiarity with the Autosar development environment
- Familiarity with Vector tools e.g. CANalyzer / CANape / CANoe.
- Familiarity with Automotive SPICE, MISRA C, ASIL-B&D and ISO26262 requirements.
- Masters or PhD preferred in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related area or 5+ years industry experience in controls for automotive systems is preferred.
