As we continue to grow and diversify the work we do across ILM, we are seeking expressions of interest for an Image Process Engineer to join the team and be a part of this exciting opportunity and team.
The Image Process Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, enhancement and maintenance of the image and color processing pipeline from acquisition all the way through to final presentation and deliverable creation. This position develops and supports processes for displaying, delivering, and creating visual effects and original experiences.
The position will require a proactive approach to setting image standards at the beginning of the project and will ensure that standards and practices are observed throughout the lifespan of the show. You will analyze and implement advanced technologies in support of image processing systems, and ensure that the technical quality and integrity of the images rendered throughout the production pipeline are of the highest standard. You are a team player with a strong global multi-site mindset.
What You'll Do

  • Help design, develop and support a fully color managed pipeline and subsequent workflows across the entire visual effects pipeline at all of the ILM studio locations (San Francisco, London, Vancouver, Sydney and Mumbai)
  • Work with the core Color and Imaging team to integrate the color management workflow and processes into all of ILM's sub-pipelines and tools, including both proprietary and off the shelf software
  • Pipeline complexity ranges from writing simple shell scripts to large scale software development projects
  • Help develop and enhance color image processing technologies to meet studio needs


What We're Looking For
Education / Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience
  • Computer programming and scripting experience with C++, Python, etc.


Required Skills

  • Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to interface with major clients, industry vendors and internal stakeholders
  • Capacity for engaging globally across ILM and implementing technology developments accordingly
  • Ability to take on responsibility, ownership, decision making and strategic leadership


Preferred Skills

  • Strong knowledge of image and media file formats, image encodings, digital cameras and image processing
  • Strong knowledge of display device technology, concepts, and standards
  • Good awareness of cross-sector solutions for color science implementations
  • Strong understanding of visual perception theory
  • Engagement with the relevant industry initiatives such as ACES, OpenColorIO, OpenImageIO, OpenEXR, etc.
  • Keen interest in future imaging and display technology trends


Technical Skills

  • Direct experience in image processing development and analysis using commercially available software such as Nuke, MATLAB and Autodesk RV
  • Experience with designing and supporting color pipeline components for complex VFX in large-scale multi-site pipelines and their complex data sets
  • Experience with on-set data capture techniques and VFX lighting/compositing/grading
  • Programming expertise in image processing, color science and associated VFX techniques
  • Strong experience with display device management, interpretation and diagnostics
  • Experience with Jira, or equivalent systems, for issue tracking and the subsequent project management structures around such systems


The hiring range for this position in San Francisco, CA is $145,400 to $181,700 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
