About Plasmidsaurus

Plasmidsaurus is on a mission to accelerate new cures and promote a healthier planet by unlocking a new level of productivity for scientists. Our sequencing services are used daily by thousands of innovators, including Nobel laureates, Fortune 100 pharma, and over 70,000 scientists.

We began by revolutionizing plasmid sequencing, making it exponentially cheaper and faster, with innovative sequencing technologies and a global network of laboratories that turn samples into answers in hours, not weeks.

Now we are expanding that same disruptive model across all of genomics. With the launch of our new RNA-seq service, we are taking a bold step toward our vision to sequence everything, providing scientists everywhere with faster, simpler, and more affordable access to the data that powers discovery.

Every team member at Plasmidsaurus plays a crucial role in driving the future of biotech research. Together, we are building the world’s most efficient sequencing engine that operates overnight, scales globally, and helps scientists make breakthroughs faster than ever before.

Position Overview

You'll work on the bioinformatics engine powering that impact, wearing many hats:

  • Building blazing-fast, production-grade bioinformatics workflows that process thousands of samples per day.

  • Developing novel algorithms that turn raw sequencing data into fast, intuitive, and accurate insights.

  • Staying on top of cutting-edge tools and finding creative ways to integrate them into real-world pipelines.

  • Hunting down bugs and taming the chaos of real-world sequencing data — biological artifacts, platform quirks, and all.

  • Translating bioinformatics outputs into dynamic scientific UX that feels magical to researchers.

  • Mentoring teammates and growing your own skills in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.

Culture

You are someone who:

  • Thrives with high agency and high ownership — you lead projects from idea to production.

  • Is curious about the intersection of biology, algorithms, and software engineering.

  • Gets excited knowing your work directly accelerates the next generation of medicines and biotechnology.

  • Values clear communication and loves helping others level up.

  • Is energized by a tight-knit, fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

PhD in a quantitative field (Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Physics) plus 3+ years building production bioinformatics pipelines.

Required:

  • Deep expertise in at least one of: microbial genomics (assembly/metagenomics), variant calling / large-scale genomics, or bulk/single-cell RNA-seq.

  • Significant experience with production Nextflow or Snakemake pipelines, including cloud deployments.

  • Strong understanding of core sequence analysis principles — alignment, assembly, and beyond.

  • Solid molecular biology foundation and hands-on experience with Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing.

  • Proficiency in Python (numpy, pandas, biopython, Jupyter) and conda-based package management.

  • Docker / Apptainer / Singularity, Git + GitHub.

  • Experience building intuitive web tools for bioinformatics analysis.

  • Linux shell scripting and ability to write clean, production-ready code.

  • Experience with large-scale genomic data processing and storage.

Preferred:

  • Performant software in a compiled language (C++, Rust, etc.).

  • Strong interest in data visualization for scientific UX.

  • 1+ year of biology wetlab experience.

  • Track record developing novel bioinformatics algorithms.

We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly align with the job description as we seek out diverse and creative perspectives. Team members who love to learn and collaborate in an inclusive environment will thrive with us. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. If you need additional accommodations to feel comfortable during your interview process, please let us know at [email protected].

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
