Automation and Controls Engineering Intern, Summer 2025


The intern will work closely with the engineering team to develop and implement automation solutions for our manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience designing, developing, and testing automation systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing, developing, and implementing automation systems for our manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to identify areas where automation can improve efficiency, safety, and quality.
  • Test and troubleshoot automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and other equipment.
  • Creating and updating electrical schematics.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation related to automation systems, including specifications, drawings, and manuals.
  • Learn from production personnel on the use and maintenance of automation systems.
  • Continuously learn and stay up to date with new technologies and trends in manufacturing automation.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Familiarity with Beckhoff, Mitsubishi, and Omron PLCs, Windows and Linux PCs, Ignition, Python, C#, and SQL
  • Basic understanding of PLCs and HMIs.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical software or other design tools preferred.

Educational Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time academic program at an accredited college or university in Electrical, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering.

Working Conditions/Hours/Location

This role is an hourly position, and the intern will be required to work at least 30 hours per week during the summer. The start date and duration of the internship are flexible depending on availability, with a minimum commitment of 8 weeks.

Internship will take place onsite in San Carlos, CA HQ’s

Physical Demands – Office and Manufacturing Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and, pull/push; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment – 

Includes both a typical office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, and a shop environment, with exposure to high noise levels from operating machines, physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts, nuisance dust, and skin exposure to chemicals used to run/maintain machines.

PPE-

May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to safety glasses, safety shoes, bump caps, gloves, hair nets, masks, & clean-room frocks while adhering to the prescribed safety procedures.
