Job Description
 

Reporting to Senior Vice President, Research Strategy, Innovation, and Portfolio (RSIP) this high caliber individual will join as Associate Director, Research Strategy, Innovation, and Portfolio to support the EVP, Head of Research, Research Leadership Team (RLT), and RSIP Leadership Team (RSIP-LT).  They will perform key operational activities and drive a variety of strategy and planning initiatives.  A primary responsibility will be Chief of Staff role for Research, working closely with SVP, RSIP.

  • While working closely to support these leaders, the individual will partner with a variety of key stakeholder groups on various projects (wider Research, critical support functions such as IT, Corporate Engineering and Facilities, CEO Office, Development Functions, Finance, Corporate Development, etc.).

  • The selected candidate will take accountability and responsibility for driving elements of RLT and RSIP-LT meetings and planning tools; assisting in creating major internal and external executive presentations; and assisting or driving a variety of strategic projects through organization, tracking, and execution.

  • Over time, the selected candidate will also shape and drive strategic initiatives and develop work products (models, frameworks, presentations, recommendations, thought pieces, etc.) for senior level management consideration.

  • Manage and mentor a direct report responsible for Research strategic projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and fostering professional growth

Knowledge, Experience and skills

  • Strong strategic thinking. Experience and ability to develop and articulate complex strategic issues and ideas (e.g., Research strategy, cohesion of R&D and Corporate planning) and break down complex goals into actionable plans (e.g. space expansion, change management communications).

  • Nimble and agile. Must be able to work on multiple projects with overlapping timelines and meet all deadlines.  Needs to be able to quickly digest and prioritize information.

  • Must have outstanding PowerPoint skills to develop executive level slide sets and be able to verbally articulate a story.

  • Strong information and project tracking and management skills and mastery of associated tools.

  • Long Term Strategic Planning. Prior experience supporting, participating in, or leading strategic planning activities.  Includes development of materials (models, slides) for executive level discussions on these topics.

  • Industry knowledge. Adept and knowledgeable about the biotech and biopharma segment including drivers of successful drug hunter culture, R&D productivity, and creative approaches to a rapidly changing context.

  • Ability to understand Gilead portfolio, science focused culture, areas of current strength and intended growth, and ways of working together. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Advance Degree (i.e., PhD) and 5+ years of biopharma industry experience in research, strategy/planning, project management, partnered innovation, or related  OR

  • Master’s Degree and 8+ years of biopharma industry experience in research, strategy/planning, project management, partnered innovation, or related OR

  • Bachelors’ Degree and 10+ years of experience biopharma industry experience in research, strategy/planning, project management, partnered innovation, or related

Preferred Qualifications

  • Scientific education with bachelor’s degree and advanced degree, PhD, MD, or MBA preferred

  • 6-8 years of experience in biopharma industry in research, strategy/planning, project management, partnered innovation, or related roles.  Hands on experience in research required; experience in biopharma R&D and/or business desirable.

  • People leadership experience managing direct report(s)

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.  Able to establish positive interactions with widely diverse personalities and communication styles.

  • Ethics, integrity and maturity to work with senior level leaders and comport themselves appropriately

  • Strong team-oriented ethos and collaborative style

  • Superior problem-solving skills and ability to work well under pressure in a demanding environment.

  • Ability to work cross functionally and understand the motivations of colleagues in other functions and at different levels in the organization.

  • Detail-oriented; must be willing to deliver excellence on small details as well as high-level outcomes.

  • Ability to influence upward and downward in organization, emphasis on working across organization.

  • Quick learner – applies 80/20 rule

  • Flexible – comfortable with fluid objectives and priorities


 

The salary range for this position is: $195,670.00 - $253,220.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
