Anthropic, the artificial intelligence innovator behind generative AI chatbot Claude, just announced its latest generation of AI tools, the Claude 3 model family. This new line of solutions consists of three new models, Opus, Sonnet and Haiku.

Compared to previous generations, Claude 3 models have heightened capabilities in analysis and forecasting, content creation, code generation and non-English language conversation. Each of the models can process visual formats like photos and technical diagrams while demonstrating a more nuanced understanding of requests than its predecessors. Claude 3 can also recognize genuinely harmful requests more often, according to Anthropic.

Opus is the most powerful product in the Claude 3 family, capable of navigating complex tasks with near-human levels of understanding and fluency, according to the company. This tool is best-suited for tasks like planning and executing complex actions across APIs and databases.

Sonnet follows Opus in terms of capability. It’s a model that’s twice as fast as Claude’s previous iterations and boasts higher intelligence levels. The tool is built to tackle enterprise workloads and can search vast amounts of data to retrieve information or perform sales tasks like offering product recommendations.

Rounding out the new suite of tools is Haiku. This model is designed to be fast and compact. It’s intended to provide near-instant responses to simple queries and requests. Anthropic’s customers can use Haiku for tasks like providing live customer support and moderating content.

Claude 3 models are also equipped for multimodal support. While the solutions cannot generate images, users can upload data like photos, charts and documents for analysis, according to reporting from CNBC. The models can also summarize approximately 150,000 words, the same article mentioned.

The launch of Claude 3 follows a fast-paced period of growth for Anthropic. In active competition against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the company has secured more than $7 billion in funding since its founding in 2021. Its investors include Salesforce, Google and Amazon, which recently entered a $4 billion partnership with Anthropic to fuel responsible AI development.

As of March 4, Opus and Sonnet are currently available in 159 countries, and Haiku will be released soon, according to Anthropic.
