Built for today’s app developers, EdgeDB created an open-source, graph-relational database designed to streamline the developer experience. Its goal is to solve design challenges that make existing databases onerous to use, such as query problems. The company announced Monday a Series A round of funding to expand its offerings.

Backed by lead investors Nava Ventures and Accel, EdgeDB is putting $15 million toward developing its cloud-based database and application development product, EdgeDB Cloud. The company’s current database offering has more than 20,000 monthly active users and 9,500 stars on GitHub.

“Databases have always been and will always be the defining piece of any technological stack,” Yury Selivanov, EdgeDB’s co-founder and CEO, said in a statement. “While there has been a lot of activity and interesting developments in databases in the past decade, relational databases are built on a model that is decades old and has become increasingly inadequate for the rapidly transforming software development field. Organizations are looking for modern, scalable systems that can help reduce costs while accelerating development, which is why we built EdgeDB.”

EdgeDB’s code views a database’s schema, or blueprint, as objects with properties connected by links, according to the company’s website. This makes it comparable to a relational database with an object-oriented data model or a graph database with a strict schema. The resulting graph-relational database encompasses tools for schema migrations, a graphical user interface and client libraries for mainstream programming languages.

Launched in 2019, EdgeDB serves a number of startups including BeatGig, a platform that helps users book live music for events. Its solution works to help this company and others simplify their backend development processes.

Following its new capital raise, EdgeDB will spend time developing its EdgeDB Cloud offering ahead of its release in Q1 next year. It’s adding native integrations with GitHub, Vercel and Netlify. The solution will also include features such as zero-configuration, DevOps tools, an updated user interface and integration with existing EdgeDB tooling.

EdgeDB Cloud is currently active in a private demo.

As users join the waitlist for EdgeDB’s new platform, the company is actively hiring for a handful of roles. Open positions include a senior cloud engineer, a TypeScript engineer and a developer advocate.
