San Francisco-based app development startup Streamlit just raised $21 million in a Series A financing round announced Tuesday. The round was co-led by GGV Capital and Gradient Ventures.

According to the company, the open source app framework for data science and machine learning has been used to build over 200,000 apps for companies around the world. Streamlit provides ML engineers with custom design tools in an immediate, live-coding environment in order to streamline the app development process. The company enables data scientists to create apps as a byproduct of their existing workflow.

“Apps are the communication medium of the 21st century,” Adrien Treuille, co-founder and CEO of Streamlit, said in a statement. “There’s been a thirst in the data and machine learning communities to create rich apps that blend together data, models, visualizations, and business logic.”

The new investment will be used to further accelerate Streamlit’s software development. Streamlit for Teams, the company’s paid platform for app deployment and sharing, is currently in closed beta, with plans to expand in the near future. The company will also introduce new ways to extend apps, including custom layout and programmable state features.

“Our goal is to make Streamlit not only the most productive (and fun) app-building experience in Python, but also the most powerful,” Treuille said in a blog post.

According to the company, Streamlit has been downloaded over 400,000 times. The company’s list of clients include tech giants like Google and Uber as well as major sports organizations like the NBA.

“Every day we see the Streamlit community share apps to predict COVID rates, visualize new chemical compounds, analyze music playlists, recommend movies, and much more,” Treuille continued. “We are awed, inspired, and delighted daily by the community’s creativity.”

Given the latest round of financing the company is also looking to expand the size of its team. Streamlit is currently hiring for open roles in product and engineering.

The company, founded in 2018, has raised a total of $27 million in venture capital to date, according to Crunchbase. Additional investors Bloomberg Beta, Elad Gil and Daniel Gross also participated in the round.
